A ceremony which will see a street in Long Beach, New York named in honour of the late rapper MF DOOM, has been announced.

The City Council of Long Beach have announced that the prestigious honour will be bestowed on Saturday, July 31 at 2pm EST (7pm BST).

The street will be named ‘KMD – MF DOOM Way’, honouring both the rapper, born Daniel Dumile, and the 90s hip hop group KMD he formed with his brother Dingilizwe ‘DJ Subroc’ Dumile.

It will run between Long Beach Boulevard and Riverside Boulevard, where the rapper and his brother spent their childhood.

The dedication was approved on July 6 after extensive lobbying from Dr. Patrick C. Graham, a professor, public and social sector leader and a former schoolmate of DOOM, and a petition and presentation by the ‘KMD – MF DOOM Way Committee’ led KMD dancer Jason ‘J-Quest the Boogieman’ Massey.

“The honoring of Daniel Dumile, the artist known as MF DOOM, is part of a tradition that must include the hip hop generation,” Graham told HipHopDX.

“His hip hop lyricism represents some of the culture’s best linguistic metaphors, garnering intergenerational and interracial admiration. His life and art symbolize the resilience we need in our present context.”

DOOM died on Halloween last year, with his death only made public a few months later on New Year’s Eve.

Since then, posthumous releases have included a full-length album with Czarface and a remix of The Avalanches’ ‘Tonight May Have To Last Me All My Life’.
