The Salvation Army of Kankakee did not reach their Red Kettle Campaign goal this past Christmas Season and they are in dire need of both food and money donations to be able to continue helping those in our area who are struggling with food and housing insecurity. They are currently holding a Summer Fundraiser which ends on July 31st. They ask that you please bring nonperishable food donations to 148 North Harrison Avenue in Kankakee this month. In-person financial donations can be dropped off to this address as well. The fundraiser is also happening online where you can use digital forms of payment. A food drive is going on now through July 31st at your local Menards home improvement store on Christine Drive in Bradley. Place non-perishable food items into the bin at the front of the store and all food collected will be forwarded to a local organization to help those in need.

The Illinois-based nonprofit organization, “Warriors Walk” is dedicated to bringing together a network of VFWs, American Legions, businesses, schools and community members to combat veteran suicide. You can join the fight on Saturday, September 13th when they host their 6th annual “Warriors Walk Ruck” to raise suicide awareness. This will take place at New Lenox Commons on Veterans Parkway in New Lenox with registration opening at 8am. Walk from 1 to 20 miles; the distance is up to you and it’s free to participate. A post-ruck afterparty will take place with military vehicles, activities, raffles and vendors. There will also be live music, a bounce house and food provided. Another “Manteno Cruise Night” will be taking place on Tuesday, July 1st from 6 to 9pm with rows of cool vintage and custom cars, trucks and bikes, along with food, raffle prizes, and a nice small-town atmosphere. This will be on North Main Street in downtown Manteno.

Several makers and vendors will gather on Tuesday, July 1st for the return of the “Peotone Market on Main”, taking place from 4 until 8pm in downtown Peotone. There will be vendors selling Mexican food and pierogies, and Nick K-B Music will also be performing from 5 to 7pm.

The Village of Bourbonnais’ next “Lunchtime Bites & Beats on Festival Street” event will be happening on Wednesday, July 2nd from 11am to 1pm at The Grove on Main Street Northwest in Bourbonnais. There will be food trucks on site offering pizza and chicken sandwiches, along with live music from Kristi Alsip.

The 97th Annual Beecher 4th of July Festival will take place July 2nd through July 5th at Fireman’s Park with live music and parades, a festival market and food vendors, a carnival with wristbands available, beer garden, and a huge fireworks show on the 4th of July at 9:30pm. States Attorney Jim Rowe’s “Reel Justice Fishing Club” for kids and adults, in partnership with the Northern Illinois Anglers Association, will meet again on Wednesday, July 2nd from noon to 3pm at the Manteno Veterans Home for BBQ and Fishing with our Veterans. Celebrate Independence Day along the south banks of the Kankakee River during a star-spangled spectacular on Friday, July 4th featuring music from the Kankakee Valley Symphony Orchestra, Kankakee Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the Kankakee Municipal Band. This will be at Kankakee Community College with gates opening at 4:30pm. Admission is $20 per carload, cash only. Bring your lawn chairs. There will be food vendors and giveaways for kids. The City of Watseka and their Area Chamber of Commerce will sponsor “An American Holiday Parade” on Friday, July 4th. Milner Media’s Mike Ruble will emcee the parade, which steps off from Legion Park at 10am.

The Bourbonnais Grove Historical Society will host their Les Artisans Arts and Crafts Fair on Friday, July 4th from 9am to 3pm in the Expo Center at the Kankakee County Fairgrounds. There will be dozens of artists and fine crafters offering handmade items and original art, along with local honey, jams and jellies, baked goods and more. You can also meet local authors and artists. There will be food for sale, beverages from Love A Latte will be available to sip while you shop, and Sweet Darren’s will be offering homemade ice cream, A suggested one-dollar donation at the door will help the historical society to fund this event in the future. The Watseka Lions Club will be hosting their annual pancake and sausage breakfast on Friday, July 4th from 7 to 10am in the basement of the Saint Edmund Catholic Church at 219 East Locust Street. The breakfast will also include scrambled eggs, orange juice, milk and coffee. The cost is just a free-will donation.

The annual “Fireworks & Cheeseburgers on the River” event will take place at the Aroma Park Boat Club on Saturday, July 5th. There is a $5 per carload entry fee for this family-friendly event. The band “Midnight” will begin playing at 7pm. Fireworks will start once it gets dark out.

The Village of Manteno will host their next “Movies in the Park” event on Thursday, July 10th. They’ll be showing the original 1971 version of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”, starring Gene Wilder, at the Burke Amphitheater in Legacy Park. The film begins at dusk. The Manteno Wildcats will provide concessions beginning at 7:30pm.

The Herscher Lions Club will host its 49th annual Corn Bowl on Friday, July 11th in downtown Herscher beginning around 5pm. Enjoy roasted sweet corn served with pork sandwiches, brats, and hotdogs. There will be fun games for kids to participate in, and The Silhouettes will perform from 7 to 10pm. Proceeds will benefit the Herscher community Legion.

The Central 5K Memorial Scholarship Foundation’s “Running to Remember” race will be held Saturday, July 12th at the Village Park in Clifton. In its 22nd year and honoring Harold Barbieri (“barr-bare-E”), the annual event has already awarded over $131,000 in scholarships. This champion chip-timed 5K race will begin at 8:30am. Registration opens one-hour prior. There will also be a one-mile kids run/walk starting at 8:45 am, followed by a kids one-block dash. The 3rd Annual “Churches United in the Park” will take place Saturday, July 12th from 1 to 6:30pm with fun for all ages at the Bird Park Band Shell along West Court Street in Kankakee. There will be a mass united choir from different churches, along with live Gospel music, games and prizes, relay races, bounce houses for the kids, and the grills will be smoking some good food. Remember to bring along a lawn chair. This event is sponsored by “We Stand For Christ Jesus Ministries” and the “Gift of God Street Church”. It is free to attend and all are welcome.

The 101st Jasper County Fair begins Saturday, July 19th and runs through the 26th of the month in Rensselaer, Indiana. The Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet golf outing fundraiser, “A Swing and a Prayer” will take place on Tuesday, August 26th at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club in Lemont. Rain or shine, this will be a day filled with golf, food and drinks, a raffle, silent auction and lots of fun. Registration opens at 7:30am and the shotgun start will be at 9am.
